Pay attention to Referents.

On TOEFL®Test reading passages, you will find many words or phrases that refer to other things in the text. If you do not understand what these referents refer to, you will have great difficulty understanding the passage as a whole.

Referents can be several things, including:
Pronouns: this, it, they, he…
Phrases: this situation, these people…
Relative pronouns: who, that, which

Sometimes we read over these quickly without thinking about them, but you must learn to quickly associate these words with what they refer to.

You can practice referents easily. First, take a text passage and underline all the referents, including pronouns and phrases:

Learning about art and music is important not only on a personal level, but also on a cultural level. Every culture produces art and music. By studying these subjects’ common themes and styles, students can have a greater understanding of society, people and their own place in the culture. Furthermore, by studying the art and music of other cultures, students can develop broader cultural awareness, which is extremely important. Without it our society cannot function smoothly.
