Beware of Collocation when you use Vocabulary.

Learning how to use good vocabulary is much more than just learning the meaning of words. It's equally as important to learn how words go together, or how they collocate. Let's look at an example or two:

"Powerful" and "strong" can by synonyms, but they don't both sound correct with coffee, do they?

Try it - "powerful coffee" or "strong coffee."
Which is more natural?

Answer: we say strong coffee. "Strong" collocates well with "coffee."

Using the example of 'powerful', which is the correct choice?

1. Powerful engine
2. Powerful hamburger
3. Powerful bicycle
4. Powerful computer

There are two possible choices: first, powerful engine. Second, powerful computer.
HOWEVER, we would not expect the word powerful to match with hamburger and bycicle.
